We are passionate about helping you to take care of your animals
The Hungry Horse is a family business founded in 1982. It is the original Hungry Horse. The second store, Earlswood Hungry Horse in Solihull opened during the 1990s.
The journey at the Sutton Coldfield site began by seeing an opportunity to satisfy the equestrian feeding needs of the onsite liveries. The liveries resided alongside the Farm Shop manned by the farmworker’s wife, Rose, who lived in the farmhouse – now The Farmhouse Bistro.
A small store (Unit 2) was opened in the courtyard with 1 tonne of food and a young livery, Annabel, being ‘in charge’. Over time the business grew and expanded into other buildings on the site. The commercial logo of The Hungry Horse came about from a small ceramic model horse that was spotted on sale in Diana of Boldmere’s Florists. Most locals who have lived in the area will remember the whole site being known as The Hungry Horse too. When other businesses came to the centre it was then renamed Mitchells.
The Hungry Horse has had a variety of managers and employees over the years. We currently have a wonderful team, many of whom have worked for the business for a substantial number of years, some over 20 years, providing a wealth of experience and knowledge. The team are an asset to the business.
Animal welfare is our priority, we endeavour to stock quality products for feed, bedding, playtime, and husbandry.
There is an in-store weighbridge for our canine companions (or cats, or even humans!) that is available free of charge anytime during opening hours. We have multiple loyalty schemes operating in store for certain brands too.
We have several SQP qualified staff available to dispense wormers/flea treatments for cats, dogs, horses, and avians. Veterinary diets are also available to buy from us if your vet has recommended one of these diets.
We aim to give a personal and professional service with advice freely given. If we don’t know the answers to a question, we will try and find out or point you in the right direction. As the local area has become more built up the equestrian demands have changed and there is now a much greater emphasis on domestic pets. Circumstances are ever-changing; The Hungry Horse will adapt and expand as necessary to meet the current demands.
